The Green Mountain Strummers are a sing-a-long ukulele group, giving concerts that bring back the music of the good old days; playing songs you never forget, with words that bring back happy memories. They play enduring tunes from the 1920’s to 1950’s recognizable as songs from the Great American Songbook. The Green Mountain Strummers is comprised of five musicians, Cal Heile of Guilford, Deb Noe of Putney, Susan Rosano of Guilford, Karen Shapiro of Putney and Dennis Waring of Guilford and features the four women on ukuleles and Dennis Waring on clarinet.

The songs the Strummers play are from Tin Pan Alley, the name given to a collection of New York City music publishers and songwriters who dominated popular music of the United States from the early 1900’s to the late 1940’s. The audience will be encouraged to sing along and books of song lyrics are always available for those who would like to sing.

“I have always wanted to learn how to play a musical instrument.  When I retired from teaching, I made it a priority and learned to play a ukulele in Lisa McCormick’s classes. After those great lessons, I currently belong to three ukulele groups! The camaraderie of the Brattleboro ukulele community is what keeps me going. Tin Pan Alley music is the music I grew up with. My mom had a bunch of 78 LPs, and my sisters and I would play them for hours.”  said Deb Noe, member of the group.

This program is supported by a Brattleboro Town Arts Fund Grant and made possible by The Arts Council of Windham County. The funds were used to create 20 song lyric books to hand out to audiences during a concert so they can sing along with the group. We are very grateful for the grant we have been given and are excited to share our music with the Brattleboro community.

Songs From Tin Pan Alley

In July 2021, we received a Brattleboro Town Arts Fund Grant , made possible by the Arts Council of Windham County. We appreciate the grant funds which allowed us to create song lyric books to enable our audiences to sing along with us in a joyful way!
